TPO or EPDM? What Changes in the Adhesive Choice

A side-by-side look at bonding TPO and EPDM membranes with UNO‑GRIP™ | QD2040, and where the board layer below is handled by a different product.

Dark single-ply membrane installed across a commercial flat roof.

Contractors searching for a TPO adhesive and contractors searching for an EPDM adhesive often land on the same answer. UNO‑GRIP™ | QD2040 is the TPO/EPDM adhesive for both membrane types, including fleece-backed systems. What changes between projects is the layer being bonded, not the membrane name.

One adhesive covers both membranes

UNO‑GRIP™ | QD2040 is the TPO/EPDM adhesive for bonding TPO and EPDM membranes, including fleece-backed systems. The product selection does not change when the membrane changes.

Apply it as directed by the current TDS and SDS, and confirm the membrane, substrate, roof-system requirements, and project documents before installation.

What does change: the layer underneath

Membrane bonding and board attachment are two separate bond lines. UNO‑FOAM® | QD3000 attaches insulation and cover boards; UNO‑GRIP™ | QD2040 bonds the membrane above them.

Identify the bond line first, then select the product for that layer.

Working window for TPO and EPDM

UNO‑GRIP™ | QD2040 has a 2–4 minute dry time and a 1+ hour open time. The UniJet 11002B tip provides an adjustable 7–17 inch spray pattern.

Conditions on the roof affect timing. Confirm the current TDS before spraying.

Coverage and canister planning

A 22 L disposable canister covers up to 10 roofing squares / 1,000 sq ft of bonded area. One roofing square equals 100 sq ft.

For the board layer below, a 22 L UNO‑FOAM® canister covers up to 48 squares.

What this adhesive is not used for

UNO‑GRIP™ | QD2040 is not presented here as a seam adhesive, flashing adhesive, or sealant.

Complete seams, flashings, penetrations, and terminations with the components and methods required by the membrane or roof-system manufacturer and the project documents.

Coverage varies by substrate and application. Confirm the current TDS/SDS, roof-system requirements, and project documents before use.
